Trust, its a fragile thing in this world. Many teenagers have lost their parents trust after a rebellious act like staying out past curfew. Many politicians have lost trust in their voters after not taking care of expectations. It takes time to build it back once its lost. I’ve noticed some people carry almost like a mistrustful atmosphere while others you feel like you want to give them your wallet just to prove they are trustworthy.
Jesus handles trust in an interesting, heavenly way. In his circle of disciples, he trusts them all including Judas the betrayer. Now, reverse to the beginning of time and we find God after creating the entire universe, handing the keys over to man and saying, “Be fruitful and multiply” knowing good and well what was going to happen! What is going on? God seems to trust so readily even in the face of hurt. Trust is an expression of love and its what God does best. We trust those we love as well right? What interesting is that Adam and Eve actually trusted the devil over God! Whenever we don’t trust God, who are we trusting? Ouch. Yet, in contrast, we see the long-suffering trust and love of Jesus on the cross for us—ie those that many times entrust ourselves and our hearts to someone or something else!
I find it hard to trust because it means I might be hurt and I might have to expose my real self or it might open me up for failure. I’ve realized though that life without trust is kept to a surface level. Its going only so deep in the ocean and running back for fear of being swept away.
Inside of trust however we find the richness of life that everyone secretly desires in their heart. Its a trust of others and a trust in God. Trust allows us to be free, to love deeply and openly. When we trust, we feel comfortable and can be goofy and let our walls down. Its a beautiful and risky thing. Its something I desire more of with others and with God.
Camille and I are embarking on a faith (TRUST) journey around Europe with some of our friends in a week. Already we’ve been tested by God in trusting him. We arrived at a house here in Spain that we felt God had given us for a starting point to pray. We were setting the house up and realized the water wouldn’t turn on. It was freezing outside and inside the house. Immediately, I started hearing the voice of mistrust from the enemy, “Did God really say…” I could feel fear rising up with questions (who can help me with the water situation, is this house ever going to be warm, I can’t speak spanish that good and they speak french or Catalan here mostly anyways, maybe this whole faith trip wasn’t God, what am I going to do?!).
Then the gentle Spirit of the Father spoke to my heart and he said, “It’ll be ok, just have trust in me.” The fears were put at bay. I started speaking and praying words of faith. The water problem was fixed in 2 days just in time for our first travel partner Christer to come. Now I can look back and see God showing me his trustworthiness when situations aren’t as we thought they would be. I so often think my perfect scenario is the same one as the Father’s, sometimes it is, but he has greater plans, plans that allow me to be my true self and learn about how to be in perfect trust with my heavenly Father! I’m sure this will not be the most smooth trip around Europe and I’m kind of excited because I get to see God move and my trust for him and my travel mates increased.
He has the same plans for you. He wants you, his child, to have greater trust in him, the Heavenly Father.
O Father, take us to deeper trust. May we all trust you with our entire lives. AMEN
