Chasing Mice at Street Church

We’ve been partnering with Street Church every Friday. We hand out Kaffe (Coffee), Choklad (hot chocolate), and some cookies to pedestrians on the street. We strike up conversations to them and of course the topic turns to God as they see our display of Bibles and verses and our jackets that say “Street Church” on them. We find people from all walks of life, countries, and languages in this multicultural city. During the last one on Friday, Rex, Christian (our good friend from here in Malmo) and I went on a prayer walk. It was such a amazing time with the Lord! We just prayed for the Spirit to encounter the people we meet at Street Church and for God to be present in our conversations and lead people to us that are on His heart or need some Truth.

We walked back to the table to find the regular Street Church guys talking to some punk rockers. I think they (street church guys) were happy we were back because they were a bit intimidated by the appearance of the punk rockers. They had metal studded spikes and leather jackets with 1 foot high dyed mohawks. I could tell one of the guys was getting frustrated by the questions one of the punk rockers was asking. They were obviously trying to trap us in a theological debate for the fun of it. We all just tried to speak truth and turn the conversation to Jesus. Rex and I could see these guys were just looking to belong to a community and have their own independent identity. They wanted to go against the grain of society. We were thinking about it after and thought all these things are found by following Jesus-community, identity and going in the opposite direction of the World (being in the world but not of the world). The group left but then came back later and talked some more. Once they relaxed, they were really cool to talk to and we discussed many topics. I really pray that a seed was watered and that what they are seeking is Jesus.

Street Church with ChristianRex was keeping me entertained by practicing his swedish and asking people if they want coffee or hot chocolate. I was doing a study on using sales language to get people to stop (“get some free, delicious coffee to keep you warm on this cold night” <–marketing geek). A couple walked by and turned us down by totally ignoring us! It happens sometimes, but this time was different. The guy stopped 10 ft past our table and started looking for something. Rex offered to help, but found out the guy was actually looking at a mouse in the snow! I came over because I was curious to see what was going on. I started chasing the mouse and it hid in a light pole and it disappeared. While I was chasing mice, Rex found out Marcos was from LA, only about 1.5 hours from where Rex was from, and he had lived in Hawaii, where we just were for 3 months. We started conversing a bit more and found out he was here because his brother was in the hospital with cancer and it was spreading to other organs. We ended up praying for him and for healing in his brother. It was such a cool moment. I felt like Marcos went away much more at peace ad I feel like the meeting was led by the Lord. Thank you Lord!

Those were just 2 stories of people we talked to at Street Church. During our time here in Malmo, we had many other stories with this wonderful ministry! The people that put it on genuinely love the Lord. They are a gift for this city!
