Abba Father

This week’s speaker was Marty Meyer (he and his wife, Kelly, run YWAM Idaho ywamidaho.org) and he spoke on the Father heart of God. I’ve prayed to the father my whole life (“Our Father who art in heaven..”) but this brought to light a much deeper and more meaningful relationship of God as our Father.

Jesus came to earth to reveal the Father and to reconcile the relationship that Adam destroyed with sin. Throughout his ministry, Jesus referred to God as Father, because, well, He was! Jesus also revealed that His Father is our Father. We are children of the Living God and it definitely has perks!

“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs-heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” (Romans 8:16-17)

Wait, joint heirs with Christ? That means we all inherit the same things as Christ. How awesome is that? I’m pretty sure God loved Jesus like crazy and that love is passed to all his adopted children. His Fatherly love is incredible! Not just for the saved, but for the unsaved or the lost sheep (the entire world). Look at the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11-31. His son left him, but when he returned the Father brought out the best robes and prepared a feast! He also said, “This son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!”. Jesus was talking about our relationship with the Father. We may leave him, but He will always be there waiting with open arms and a feast.

Sometimes we correlate the relationship with our earthly father as the way our Heavenly Father will treat us, but we have to start from scratch in our thinking even if we had an awesome dad, because God is the perfect father. God’s approval is based on his Love not if we sin or not (performance). The way we think could be learned from our earthly father or society’s performance-based systems. We, for some reason, always want to perform to attempt approval from the Father, but it’s not how his love works (or salvation works) because His Love isn’t based on performance! Get rid of those notions and accept that God loves you—your Heavenly Father loves you! Love Him back and out of your love for Him you will do great things for Him, because your heart will begin to mirror His heart.

A side thought that Marty brought up is the idea of getting to Heaven because Heaven is this amazing place. No doubt Heaven will be amazing but why? Is it because it has streets of Gold? That’s pretty cool, but how amazing is it that our Father created Heaven. We get to go hang out with the very creator of this amazing place. I think we will be so busy looking at the Glory of our Father that we won’t even notice those streets of gold.

Thanks for reading!  Hope you learned more about our Heavenly Father. Love you all!
