Follow is an action verb
I was in Brazil a few years ago and was speaking to a class of 4th or 5th graders. It was an amazing opportunity to talk to them about Jesus. I decided to talk to them about how just as they become healthy by playing soccer, they also need to be healthy spiritually. There attention span was pretty short so I resorted to doing jumping jacks in the front of class! It was probably the first time any of them had seen Americans so I may have given them an interesting view of Americans haha.
My message to that class was pretty basic, but I’ve realized spiritual health has more parallels to physical health than I had originally thought. The more I read the Bible the more I see action verbs. Just on this one page in 1 Timothy here are some verbs featured as Paul was instructing Timothy: Honor, teach, encourage, run, pursue, instruct, and guard.
Jesus said follow Him…again an action verb.
I think I need to hit the gym, how about you?
I’m getting the picture that we need to be active in seeking God, filling up on the Holy Spirit, and following Jesus.
I’ve discovered when I am seeking God through worship, prayer, or reading the bible, I am filled up with the Holy Spirit, and I want to follow Jesus. By following Jesus, I start to use all the other action verbs, not because I feel like I have to but because the Holy Spirit fills me up so much I have to pour it out somewhere!
Today’s class with our speaker Cory Martin discussed this phenomenon of being so full from an encounter with God that we have to respond in some form. It was interesting to hear all the different types of outlets like going to the streets to tell someone about Jesus, singing, or dancing for Him. I think it’s awesome that God created us to have unique ways to pour out. In those moments, I usually feel like telling someone about Jesus, giving someone a hug and telling them God loves them or writing a blog about anything to do with our Wonderful Creator. I think in these moments of feeling full of the Spirit, we get a glimpse of what living in pure glory looks like. God also gave us important things to focus on like making disciples of all nations and take care of the poor and broken.
I’d be interested to hear what you feel like doing after an awesome worship session or time of prayer so feel free to share-or just your thoughts on this topic.
Be filled up and Go!

haha Matt you are awesome! I’ll play ball with you anytime. I’m going to miss you when we go on outreach! Hopefully we can catch up in Sydney.
My fav act of worship is cooking! I feel relaxed and comfortable and able to just enjoy being with God! I can tell when the love goes into the food too. If I am stressed when cooking it never turns out quite as well.
Awesome! Your cooking is anointed! I miss it.
