Get your salt shakers out

Salt. It’s not exactly a romantic ingredient. It’s kind of like the workhorse of spices and ingredients. It can be used to add flavor to foods that lack flavor or have lost their flavor. It can be rubbed in to preserve. It can be used in other ways besides in the kitchen like cleaning wounds.

Right now you might be thinking, he’s drank to much salt water at the beach!…Let me spice things up. (Yes I did just say that)

Jesus called us salt in Matthew 13. “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled on by men.”

As with many of Jesus’ metaphors, they go way deeper than the surface. As you look at the properties of salt above, they can easily be applied to us (His Church). Salt adds flavor or life to the food. It can preserve life in dead things. It can clean wounds. Some other interesting characteristics of salt are that salt disappears into the food, you can taste the flavor in the revived food, but can’t see it.

A negative characteristic of salt when not poured out is it will clump together and become stale.

Are we sitting around talking about how salty we are or are we being poured out to revive, preserve and add life areas that area dead. Jesus is life. Lets pour Him out onto others and watch as they develop flavor!

My post was inspired this week by Tre Sheppard who spoke on the Kingdom of God in our class. Support his organization www.engagehiv.org that gives 100% of your donation to the ground where your donation makes the biggest impact. The organization doesn’t just throw money at the problem but uses strategic programs to bring people out of poverty and lower the AIDS rates while creating a healthy community.
